Cat litter training does not have to be a difficult process. Cats will want to use the litter box once they understand what it is for, so making it accessible and showing it the way a couple of times will often do the trick.

However, many cat owners make some mistakes when they are cat litter training and there are certain things that you should avoid in order to make the litter training process go smoothly and to avoid confusing your cat or cause them to have a behavior problem such as spraying the floor, couch, etc.

Location, location, location, that's right, the wrong location can ruin your chances of cat litter training and even cause your cat to associate the litter with something bad and cause them to only want to void on the floor. Do not place the litter box next to the television, washing machine, dryer, boiler, even the dishwasher.

Loud noises can and will scare your cat and cause them to avoid the litter box.

Find a quite location that is out of the way (cats like privacy too) but is still convenient for the cat. Once you have found a good location, leave it there, it will confuse the cat to have the litter box moved around.

Don't forget to consider the size of your cat, while the basement might seem like the perfect out of the way place for a litter box, it may not be easy for your three month old kitten to go up and down the stairs.

Avoid changing the brand of the kitty litter as well. Cats don't really like change, you should carefully choose your kitty litter so that you do not have to change to a different brand. Citrus scented brands will also cause your cat to avoid the litter box, so avoid that as well.

Avoid having cats share a litter tray or box...

While having three litter boxes for three separate cats may seem inconvenient, cats can be very territorial and many cats will attack a cat that tries to use the bathroom in their designated area.

Making sure that each cat has their own place will ensure that your cat litter training goes smoothly and easily without and trauma to your new cat.
